I am a scholar of the New Testament with interests in Paul, modern theology, the 'rise' of early Christianity, and the relationship between historical and theological interpretation. After several years of teaching at institutions in New York City, I was Visiting Fellow at Yale Divinity School (sponsored by Miroslav Volf) and, mostly recently, Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard Divinity School (sponsored by Giovanni Bazzana).
My current research focuses on the meaning of 'power' in Paul, the abuses of Paul's power in weakness paradox in the early church, and what it would take for modern Christianity in the West to embody a politics that resists its imperial past and present.
I am currently Adjunct Professor of New Testament at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. I hold the Ph.D. from Durham University, where I studied with Lightfoot Professor of Divinity, John M.G. Barclay, FBA. I also hold the M.A. in Theology from Regent College, Vancouver.
My first book, a lightly revised version of my doctoral thesis, is entitled Pain and Paradox in 2 Corinthians: The Transformative Function of Strength in Weakness (Mohr Siebeck, 2021). It was the subject of a review panel at the 2022 British New Testament Conference at the University of St Andrews and a revised version for practitioners and students is now under contract with Inter-Varsity Press.
I have been a guest editor for the Journal of Theological Interpretation, given invited lectures and papers at Columbia and Princeton, and I have presented my academic work at major conferences, including the annual meeting of the Society of Biblical Literature (SBL), the British New Testament Conference, and the International Meeting of the SBL. I am also the co-editor, with John Barclay, of a collection of essays entitled The New Testament in Comparison: Validity, Method, and Purpose in Comparing Traditions (T&T Clark, 2020).
My writing for laypeople has appeared in Christianity Today, Relevant Magazine, and Mere Orthodoxy. I am also a fellow of the Center for Pastor Theologians and a former pastoral tutor at St. John's College, Durham.
Outside of the classroom and the study, I am an avid basketball fan, a faithful reader of The New York Times, and an aspiring landscaper and gardener with a special interest in the authentic dry-stacked stone walls that surround the countryside near my home in New England.
I'm happy to receive speaking requests and informal inquiries.
Check out an interview with Ben about the book.
